Who's in the kitchen, anyway?

I am, much of the time! I am Jacquelyn Kuehn, the main cook and keeper of the kitchen at Penn's Acres. Sharing the kitchen with me at mealtime is the love of my life, John.

As we sit together at the table, a small, quiet group gathers inconspicuously around us. First comes Penny, the namesake of Penn's Acres. Then Princess, the brindled gray cat who looks as though she has a noble lineage, curls up regally near the stove. Suddenly Honey, the little cat, appears on the windowsill outside, expecting to be let in the window. In their standoffish way, even the cats are glad to be part of the family.

Ours is a musical family: John teaches music at Indiana University of PA, where I also teach piano when they need me. Philip is a jazz bassist. Both Mary and Carolyn have performed extensively on several instruments, though neither has pursued music as a career. Carolyn did marry a music teacher, however.

We love life in all of its facets, but above all we love Jesus Christ, the One who is absolute, universal truth. He is good all the time.

This kitchen letter was born with the words, "I'd enjoy doing that!"

I caught a love for cooking from my own mother, with whom I still enjoy exchanging recipes and food stories. One day, while sitting in my kitchen, reading Cook and Tell, another excellent cooking letter, I said aloud, "I'd enjoy doing that!" And a year later, here we are, about to go to press with issue number ten!

Is there anyone else in the kitchen?

John and I are enjoying our more-or-less empty nest, though two people at a table that can be expanded to hold sixteen feels a bit small. We're always delighted when our children or grandchildren come home. Possible visiting offspring include Glenn, a CIA-trained chef who teaches university philosophy and English; Carolyn, married to Jon, parents of delightful little girls Naomi, Phoebe, and Esther; Philip, a freelance bassist, composer and arranger in New York city; and Mary, about to finish college. We are richly blessed!
